Shower types explained: electric, mixer and power showers

Quick answer: the right shower depends far more on your plumbing than on the showerhead you like the look of. Electric showers heat cold mains water on demand and work independently of your boiler. Mixer showers blend existing hot and cold water and usually give the best all-round performance. Power showers add a pump, but only suit gravity-fed systems with a cylinder and a loft tank. Confirm what your house can supply before you choose a style.
Shower shopping usually starts with a picture: a wide rainfall head, a glass screen, a tiled recess. That is the easy part. The decision that actually determines whether you enjoy the shower every morning is invisible once it is fitted, and it is made much earlier — which type of shower your plumbing can properly support.

When does an electric shower make sense?
An electric shower is the most self-contained option. Because it heats cold mains water as it passes through, it will still deliver a hot shower when the heating is off, the cylinder has run cold, or the boiler is being serviced. That independence is genuinely useful, which is why they remain popular in second bathrooms, loft conversions and ensuites some distance from the hot water source.
The trade-off is flow. The unit can only heat so much water per minute, so a higher kilowatt rating gives a stronger shower — and everything runs slower in winter, when the incoming mains water is colder. It is a practical, dependable shower rather than a luxurious one. It also needs a dedicated electrical circuit, which is a job for a qualified electrician and something to raise at survey stage rather than on fitting day.
When is a mixer shower the better choice?
For most homes we work in, a thermostatic mixer shower is the sensible answer. It draws on hot water you have already paid to heat, so it can deliver a much better flow than an electric unit, and it gives you a consistent temperature that does not lurch when someone runs a tap downstairs.
Its performance is only ever as good as the system behind it. A combi boiler or an unvented mains-pressure cylinder will usually drive a mixer shower well, including a generous rainfall head. An older gravity-fed system with a cylinder and a loft tank may need help, which is where a pump or a different specification comes in.
What about power showers and pumped systems?
A power shower is simply a mixer with a pump built in, designed to boost a weak gravity-fed supply. Plenty of older Manx properties still have a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard and a cold tank in the loft, and in those houses a power shower or a separate pump can transform a disappointing trickle.
The critical rule: you cannot pump a combi boiler or a mains-pressure unvented cylinder. Doing so is not permitted and risks damaging the system. If someone offers you a power shower without first asking what hot water system you have, that is a warning sign.
What should you check before choosing?
- Your hot water system — combi, unvented cylinder, or gravity-fed with a loft tank. This narrows the options immediately.
- Incoming pressure and flow — the honest limit on what any mixer or rainfall head can deliver.
- Thermostatic control — worth having as standard, particularly in a family bathroom.
- Where the valve and head sit — pipework routes are far easier to change before walls are boarded and tiled.
- How many people use it, and when — a single ensuite and a shared family bathroom have different demands.

How does this affect the cost of the bathroom?
The shower valve itself is rarely what moves the budget. Changes to the hot water system, new electrical circuits or moving the shower to a different wall have more effect on the overall figure than the brand of the head.

What is the difference between an electric and a mixer shower?

Can I have a power shower with a combi boiler?

Why does my electric shower feel weaker in winter?
An electric shower heats water as it flows through, so the colder the incoming mains water, the more slowly it has to run to reach the same temperature. That is why the same unit can feel perfectly fine in August and noticeably weaker in January. A higher kW rating reduces the difference but does not remove it.
What is a thermostatic shower and do I need one?
A thermostatic valve holds your chosen temperature and shuts down quickly if the cold supply drops, for example when a tap is opened elsewhere. It is the standard we fit as a matter of course, and it matters most in family bathrooms where children or older relatives use the shower.
Do I need a bigger shower head or better pressure?
Usually pressure and flow, not head size. A large rainfall head spread over a weak supply feels disappointing. Confirm what your system can deliver first, then choose a head and valve that suit it, rather than the other way round.
