How to plan a bathroom layout: space, zones and pipework

Quick answer: plan a bathroom layout around the things you cannot easily move — the soil pipe, the window, the door swing and the joists — then place the WC, basin and shower around them. Protect clear floor space between fittings rather than filling every wall, and settle the layout before first fix, because moving a waste pipe on paper costs nothing and moving it after tiling costs a great deal.
Most disappointing bathrooms are not badly finished. They are badly arranged. The tiles are fine, the suite is fine, but two people cannot get past each other, the door clips the towel rail, and the radiator ended up on the only wall that made sense for storage. Almost all of it traces back to decisions made in the first hour of planning.
What should you plan around first?
Work outward from the fixed points, not inward from a shopping list.
- The soil pipe. This is the single biggest constraint in the room. It decides where the WC wants to live, and everything else has more freedom than it does.
- The window. It sets natural light and ventilation, and it rules out a full-height shower enclosure on that wall in most cases.
- The door and its swing. An inward-opening door can sterilise a surprising amount of floor.
- Joist direction. Waste pipes run easily along joists and awkwardly across them. This quietly decides how expensive a change of plan is.
- The wall you actually see. The view from the doorway is the one you get every day. Give it the best fitting, not the towel rail.
On the island this matters more than average. Older terraced and stone-built properties often have the soil stack on one external wall, thick walls that eat into internal dimensions, and loft or dormer bathrooms where a roof slope removes standing height exactly where a shower would otherwise go.
How much clear space do fittings need?
Fittings need room to be used, not just room to exist. These are the working figures we design around before anything is confirmed on site.

Two clearance zones are allowed to overlap — the space in front of the basin and the space in front of the bath can be the same floor. That single idea is what makes compact rooms work, and it is why a plan on paper beats guesswork with a tape measure.
When is it worth moving the pipework?
Moving a basin or a shower is often straightforward. Moving a WC is the decision that deserves real thought, because waste needs a consistent fall over a short run, and achieving that can mean lifting floors, boxing in a new route or fitting a pump.
It is usually worth it when the current position wastes the best wall, blocks a window, or forces an awkward door swing you will resent for twenty years. What order should the decisions come in?
- Confirm the fixed points — soil pipe, window, door, joists, ceiling height.

- Place the WC, since it has the least freedom.
- Place the basin and storage on the wall that keeps the floor clear.
- Add heating and the towel rail — before tiling, not after.
- Plan lighting, ventilation and sockets while walls are still open.
- Then choose finishes. Tiles and taps are the last decision, not the first.

Can you move a toilet in a bathroom?

Which way should a bathroom door open?
Outward is often better in a small bathroom because an inward swing can sterilise a metre of usable floor. Where an outward swing would block a landing, a sliding or pocket door can release the same space. This needs deciding early, as it changes where fittings can sit.
Does the layout have to change to get a walk-in shower?
Not always. Plenty of Manx bathrooms fit a walk-in shower in the footprint the bath already occupies, with no pipework moved. It is when the shower moves to a new wall that drainage and floor build-up need proper thought.
When is the layout locked in during a renovation?
At the design stage, before first fix. Cable routes, waste positions and stud walls are all set before boarding and tiling, so layout changes after that point mean undoing finished work. Time spent on the plan is the cheapest time in the whole project.
